What is Dijon Blend limestone?

Dijon limestone is a very popular natural stone floor tile option, due to it being versatile, hardwearing, and timeless. When shopping between different types of Dijon limestone, you may come across the Dijon Blend selection and ask, ‘what is Dijon Blend limestone?’. This post will cover the main ways in which the Dijon Blend differs from the premium Dijon limestone selection, as well as the different features the Blend selection provides.

Dijon Blend Limestone Vs Other Dijon Limestones

As we have found through years of experience importing and dealing with natural stone, there is a demand for both the highest grade of Dijon limestone, as well as more rustic selections, and so it is important to offer both choices and be clear about the features of each type.

Dijon Blend Tumbled Kitchen LimestoneOur premium Dijon limestone is the top selection of the highest grade of Dijon, yielding lighter and more consistent tones. You should expect to receive a softly-coloured array of honey and sand hues, along with subtle flowering and occasional fossils from tile to tile. However, if you would prefer a rustic and cost-effective floor or outdoor tile, then the Dijon Blend selection will be perfect for you. Dijon Blend showcases a higher level of colour variation than the premium Dijon, with some darker tones mixed in, along with a higher array of natural features, such as calcite veining, fossils, pitting and oxidisation within the stone. These natural characteristics add a traditional charm to the Dijon Blend limestone and make for an even more unique look.

Where could I use Dijon Blend limestone?

Dijon Blend limestone can be used in any indoor or outdoor project, but it lends itself beautifully to rustic or traditional properties and rooms, where a characterful and unique natural flagstone is paramount. Because of its neutral shade, there are also many different styles and colours of décor and furniture that Dijon Blend works with, such as rich greens, soft blues or even pale pinks. For example, the kitchen below includes dark, emerald coloured cabinetry, with Dijon Blend limestone providing an excellent contrast against the green hues.

In terms of room settings, Dijon Blend works particularly well in country kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and outdoor spaces, where the natural variation helps to complete the rustic flagstone look. The extra surface texture of Dijon Blend also provides the benefit of added grip outdoors, making it a great paver option for traditional or rustic garden spaces. Another benefit of Dijon Blend is its cost effectiveness, with the lower price being an ideal option for large, expansive spaces offering a significant overall saving.

What sizes and formats does Dijon Blend limestone come in?

One of the main attractions to the premium Dijon limestone selection also applies to Dijon Blend limestone – that is the great variety of tiles sizes and thicknesses to choose from. This allows you to tailor your tile selection to the size and shape of your space.

Dijon Blend Limestone Outdoor Pavers

Firstly, there is of course the ever-popular free length format, which gives a wonderfully natural laying pattern in which the grout joints are randomly staggered from row to row. Alternatively, if you prefer a uniform third or half bond format, then there is also the 600x400mm fixed size Dijon Blend.

For tile size, we normally suggest a smaller format for smaller spaces and a larger format for more expansive areas. The smaller fixed size 600×400 Dijon Blend is ideal for hallways, bathrooms, or small outdoor spaces. The smaller size allows for a greater number of grout joints and individual tiles to be visible, making the space appear larger. Alternatively, if you have a big open-plan room or patio, then one of the 500mm or 600mm wide free length formats will work perfectly. The project below features Dijon Blend limestone pavers in the 600mm wide free length format around an outdoor pool.

How should I lay Dijon Blend limestone?

The laying method used is the same as with the premium Dijon limestone. With Dijon Blend, we recommend using a lighter hand during the installation process when working with pavers. These are normally tamped down into the mortar bed using a mallet, and so with tiles that have fissures or calcite veining, we recommend avoiding direct hits on these areas or using less force than normal, as this may cause breakages.

When ordering your Dijon Blend tiles, we also recommend adding a little extra for wastage: 15% rather than the usual 10%. This way, if there are any tiles that you would prefer not to use, then you will not be left short. Similarly, due to its natural character and variation, we recommend dry laying your Dijon Blend tiles out prior to installation so that you can make sure the colour variation is dispersed evenly and naturally, along with allowing you to pick out any unique or interesting tiles you would like to lay in prominent places.

Is Dijon Blend limestone easy to maintain?

Yes – maintaining your newly laid Dijon Blend will be the same process as our other Dijon limestone options. Sealing your tiles inside is recommended, and is optional outside, and the cleaning process is the same too with occasional mopping using a suitable natural stone cleaner – such as Lithofin Wash & Clean.
